In Alentejo, the table has always been more than a place to share a meal. It is a space for conversation, connection and stories that unfold without haste.
This spirit is at the heart of À Mesa é que a Gente se Entende, an initiative developed as part of Évora 2027 – European Capital of Culture. Bringing local communities, artists and cultural projects together, the programme reflects one of the region’s most distinctive qualities: the value placed on time, listening and human connection.
The initiative is closely linked to the concept of Vagar, which will shape Évora 2027. More than simply slowing down, Vagar represents a way of experiencing places with greater attention, allowing time for landscapes, traditions and encounters to reveal themselves naturally.
For visitors, this philosophy offers a particularly meaningful way to discover the Alentejo. Beyond its vineyards, historic estates, whitewashed towns and vast open landscapes, the region is defined by its people and by traditions that remain part of everyday life.
As Évora prepares to become European Capital of Culture in 2027, initiatives such as this highlight what makes the Alentejo so distinctive: a culture where some of the most memorable experiences begin simply by taking a seat, sharing a table and allowing the conversation to last a little longer.
